Background
First Life (Unawakened)
Damien Allen was born in San Diego, California in 1972. Both of his parents were under 20 and unmarried. His father soon left, leaving his mother to struggle in California to raise a child with no support. When Damien was 3 years old, his mother left the sunny skies of San Diego and followed some friends to New Orleans. She left San Diego looking for a new start and only found another end. She fell further and further down the spiral of drugs and depression, leaving Damien to fend for himself. Eventually she purchased a small house in the French Quarter of New Orleans, giving Damien a semblance of normalcy. It was in this time where Damien met one of his life long friends. Wayne Censi. They tended to stick together and look out for each other.
A few months after Damien turned 15, his mother decided she was moving back to California. She and Damien didn't get along so she didn't invite him to follow. Left with more bills then he could image and a rundown house, Damien eventually found his way to the streets. He dropped out of high school just to survive. As fate would have it, he eventually ran into a few kids at the local community college and quickly learned his love and ease with computers. It was an easy thing for him to eke out enough to eat just with the public terminals available at the libraries and local colleges.
The group he hung out with in the labs insisted that he finish high school. It wasn't until Wayne pushed that he decided to take the tests. Wayne and Damien ended up jumping from low paying job to low paying job until one night after Wayne had been fired and Damien quit a job at a local video store. Everything changed when they decided to stop for a drink.
Second Life (Virtual Adept)
Damien and Wayne ended up in a small club in New Orleans' French Quarter called the Jazz Funeral. The night progressed as most of their nights did, Damien having fun half the time and the other half of the time trying to coax Wayne into doing the same. They were in a booth resting and arguing about Wayne's choice of drink (water) when a beautiful woman slid in next to Wayne. Cassandra Vanoy, a local Hollow One, saw the fact that the two guys were about to awaken (or explode) and thought she should introduce herself before that happened. Due to a recent bout of paradox, the Hollow One was literally smoking, as if slightly on fire. The who guys decided they'd had enough of the club and decided to walk home, hoping the night air would clear their heads.
On the way home, fate once again conspired against them and they were attacked by a pack of absurd creatures, Displacer Beasts. In that moment both the avatars of Damien and Wayne awakened and helped the two young men survive. Damien was able to teleport out of the way of a Charging beast and Wayne turned into a dragon. The two men easily killed the Displacer Beasts and managed to keep a few teeth as a souvenir, thinking that this was all just a drunken dream.
Over the next few weeks things got stranger and stranger as Damien and Wayne were pulled, forcefully at times, into the awakened world. They met a few local Mages. Some were OK, and some were insane. Theora Hetirck, a Euthanatos, was pulled to the area by Fate and a need to investigate the Displacer Beast attacks. She brought with her a Virtual Adept named Kid Africa and an Akashic Brother name Mickey Chan. Damien and Wayne fell in with this group and the three experienced mages took them under their wings and taught them about the awakened world.
Kid Africa brought Damien full bore into the Virtual Adept world, teaching him the ways of the Digital Web and general life as a Virtual Adept. At the same time, Theora decided New Orleans was a place to set up a permanent home, and soon Theora, Kid Africa, Mickey Chan, Damien, and Wayne signed the charter founding The House of the Rising Sun. Theora, being a Euthanatos and just the person she was, quickly turned the chantry into a War Chantry. She often sent Damien and Wayne out to investigate and fight things that went bump in the night.
The two mages were sent to investigate a Nephandic group running a club downtown, and there was evidence that they were selling awakened drugs to the sleepers. Wayne, living a sheltered life and not knowing how the streets worked, inadvertently took some of the drugs and became hopelessly addicted. Over the next few weeks and months, Damien watched his friend fall more and more apart. The drugs eventually overcame Wayne's willpower and he attacked Cassie, the head of the new College chantry and sister to House of the Rising Sun.
Damien was able to bring Wayne around and it put a lot of stress on the chantry. At the same time, Damien was having trouble of his own. The more he tried to help and fit into this War Chantry, the more useless and out of touch he felt. His easy confidence that he had always had was slowly faltering. Every time he tried to defend his friend, he would hurt someone. Every time he tried to be strong, he was weak. This lead to the hardest decision he ever had to make.
Damien decided he was going to join the Euthanatos. He first talked to Theora and she was skeptical at best, thinking he was just upset about shooting Wayne's mentor in one accident and almost killing Wayne in another. But it didn't take long for Theora to see that he was serious. She started teaching him the ways of Wheel, what Death really meant and what it took to mete it out and guard it.
Damien agreed and Theora began to make arrangements. The next day, Damien was standing in the Chantry house at the top of the stairs talking and joking with Wayne when he felt a pressure on his neck and passed out. As a right of passage into the Euthanatos, one must first die in order to know what death is, and Theora had killed Damien with a garrote and dropped him down the stairs. The body landed at Wayne's feet.
Third Life (Euthanatos)
Damien walked through his Coumatha with purpose. Seeing the Wheel, he knew the future he was meant to see, and he knew he was destined to guard the Wheel and reincarnation. He awoke in a stark cell in the College chantry of Cerberus. His training began immediately and Damien committed every ounce of his self to it. With the guidance of Master Cenux and Master Hetterik, Damien quickly found his niche. He excelled in all aspects of his training, graduating with the blessing of Cenux after nearly a year.
Upon returning to New Orleans, he fell quickly into his new life, trying to find a balance between the Virtual Adept of old and the new Euthanatos training. Right off the bat, he felt the alienation of his old peers.
