Background

Mortal Life

Cherise (born Clara Ruth Littleford) was born in 1798 to Hannah and Levi Littleford in Stafford, Connecticut. She was the second of five siblings, an older brother (Jeremiah) and three younger sisters (Lavinia, Phoebe, and Virginia). Her father worked in a textile mill and died from injuries he sustained in a worksite accident when she was 14. Hannah relocated the family to Providence, Rhode Island to live closer to her sister, Ada Smith. Clara was closer to her brother in age and subsequently bonded more with him than her sisters.

Embrace

When she was 17, she was introduced to Charles Parker through her brother and the two began to secretly see each other. When their romance was discovered by her youngest sister, Virginia, the two began planning to run away to Boston. Virginia revealed their secret to Clara's entire family over supper and Jeremiah forbade her to see Charles. Clara escaped out her window and was astonished to see Charles waiting for her outside. He had heard the altercation and took advantage of Clara's emotional state. He proposed three things to her that night: marriage, revenge, and immortality. Clara agreed without hesitation and accepted his offers.

Kindred Life

After Clara was reborn as a vampire, Charles opted not to provide sustenance for Clara's initial blood hunger, instead choosing to turn her loose on her family. Jeremiah had spurned his little sister a year prior and his introduction of Clara gave Charles the perfect plan for revenge. She tore through the house and fed on everyone except for Virginia. Charles stopped her before she could consume her, as he had become entranced by the perfect expression of fear and shock on Virginia's face and did not want it ruined. In that moment, Clara felt reality set in as she had obtained enough blood to sate her frenzy. When Virginia finally got enough strength to run away, Charles turned back to Clara and told her that Virginia was to blame for it all.

After a period of about two months, Charles left for Boston without informing Clara. She had come to his house to ask for help in finding her sister and found it empty. Still furious at Virginia and two months into that anger building, she took Charles' departure to be the last straw. She began going door-to-door, torturing and murdering anyone who could not tell her where either Virginia or Charles was. She found that while no information had been gathered, she felt better after every body. She finally felt in control. In a brief moment of clarity, she remembered that Charles and her had planned to go to Boston, so she murdered a female passenger waiting to board the next train out and used her ticket.

Boston proved to be a distraction to Clara's manhunt. There were so many sights she'd never seen, so many different people. She remembered Charles telling her that she could convey her identity and messages through scars and other markings on her body, so she used a gentleman's cigar to burn the mark of a Toreador antitribu on the back of her left hand. She was soon approached by four well-to-do people, two with the same mark as hers on their necks. The other two were introduced as LaSombra. Clara fell in with the High Society coterie and began to establish herself in Boston. She found out later that soon after Charles' arrival in Boston, he died after he could not break himself from studying a train wreck before sunrise. Clara took great pleasure in his demise and was only sad because she was not there to witness it.

After fifty years of staying in Boston, the High Society became interested in overseas travel. They traveled to London, Paris, and Moscow, establishing ties with fellow Sabbat as they went.
