As described on the Eric Simmons page, the Vatican chest is a wooden trunk of large capacity, that has been made into a powerful talisman. On the lid itself, the emblem for the Vatican has been carefully carved into the wood.
There are numerous rotes attached to this particular talisman. One rote, a combination of life, matter and correspondence magic, allows Eric Simmons to take the chest and incorporate it into his life pattern, allowing Simmons to take the chest with him wherever he goes. The only drawback from having the talisman within him is that strength based activites are slightly more difficult for Simmons. Altough the chest itself appears to be of finite size, there is a possibility of another correspondence rote in place on the chest, to allow for almost infinite capcity.
In addition, there is also an entropy rote in place to allow the chest to be opened only when it is the right time for it to be opened. This chest has been actively sought after by the Black Church on three separate occasions. These have included:
- The Black Church raid on the Risen Savior Chantry in Miami.
- The extortion attempt in Chicago where Eric Simmons was given an article tryng to blame him for the events in Montana, a dagger with Bishop Moore's blood on it to show that they still had him and he was alive, and a note saying that the news article would be released unless he would turn over the chest.
- In Salvation, Idaho, a demon attempted to trade the life of a teenager known as Caleb for the chest.
